Fertilization occurs in the upper portion of the oviduct. Embryonic cell divisions begin and the embryo produces the hormone HCG, human chorionic gonadotropin. This hormone maintains the corpus luteum so that progesterone continues to be released, and the uterine lining continues to thicken so the embryo can survive.
